Foundational Mineral Supports
In an ideal world, we would all be drinking high quality fresh spring water, eating mineral-rich foods that come from mineral-rich soil, and getting an ocean soak a few times a week. I’m willing to be, though, that this is almost nobody’s reality.
A more accurate picture of the average health-conscious person would include drinking filtered water (maybe with some added trace mineral drops), doing their best to source high quality protein and produce, and taking a magnesium flake bath once a week. While these efforts are nothing to scoff at, it’s evident that to create a healthy environment where mineral balance is possible takes significant effort on our part.
Why is mineral balance so difficult for the average person today?
- Mineral-depleted soil
- Mercury and cadmium in our oceans
- Stressful lifestyles
- A lack of natural sunlight exposure
- Diets rich in ultra-processed foods
- Water filtration that strips water of naturally-occurring minerals

Mineral Balance as Foundational Support
For these reasons and more, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) has been gaining popularity as a way to restore mineral balance in the body. As a true root cause approach, this process removes heavy metals and other toxins from deep levels of storage in the body (which is very unlikely to happen through traditional detox or chelation approaches), while simultaneously boosting our mineral stores to appropriate levels and achieving balance between nutrients.
Beyond pushing out metals, though, mineral balance is key for so many reasons. Minerals are essential to every process in the body, and are involved in the following:
- Nervous system
- Hormonal balance
- Thyroid & adrenal health
- Teeth and bone health
- Fluid balance
- Muscle activation
- Organ health
- Immune function
- Cellular health
That list is just the beginning. There is so much more, which is why minerals are a true root cause approach to health.
Getting an HTMA done through a qualified practitioner is the best way to analyze what’s going on in your body and to build the right protocol for you. But there are certainly ways to start supporting overall mineral balance in your body today.

Top Nutritional Tips for Mineral Balance
- Eat well-cooked vegetables with every most meals (greens, cruciferous veggies, root veggies, squash)
- Don’t neglect allium foods when you cook (onions, garlic, shallots)
- Prioritize high quality protein at each meal and snack (grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, pasture-raised eggs, raw dairy, wild-caught sardines)
- Make raw dairy a staple in your diet (if tolerated)
- Opt for fermented sourdough and/or ancient grains (einkorn, spelt, kamut) over conventional flour-based foods
- Hydrate with pure water most of the time, and adding in other mineral-rich beverages to supplement (coconut water, bone broth)
Top Lifestyle Tips for Mineral Balance
- Make natural sunlight an absolute priority (early morning sun hitting the eyes before 8am, getting outside throughout the day)
- Be careful with excessive blue light; consider red light supports for early morning and evening/night
- Consider adding sauna use to your routine
- Get moving, even if it’s simply walking around after meals. Strength training and rebounding are amazing.
- Aim for roughly 8 hours of sleep per night (more or less depending on health and state in life)

- Digestive Bitters: Digestive support (could be digestive enzymes as well) is so important if we actually want to be digesting the nourishing foods we consume. Brands we like include Urban Moonshine, Earthley (has an affordable, pregnancy-safe version – use code EMBER for 10% off your first order), and Organic Olivia.
Why isn’t fulvic/humic acid (or shilajit) on this list?
I used to be a big fan of shilajit. I took it regularly, and even gave my kids fulvic/humic acid drops. But the more educated I became in mineral balancing, the more I became aware of heavy metal contamination and its dangers. Most of these supplements are likely to contain sufficient amounts of heavy metals that would negate the benefits provided by the minerals themselves.
The Path of Mineral Balancing
Given how important minerals are – and truthfully, how neglected they tend to be – it’s crucial that we design our own health goals and approach with this topic in mind. The tips here are absolutely enough to get you started, and will prove invaluable on your mineral balancing journey! That said, practitioners dedicate their entire career to the science behind all this, with very specific protocols tailored to a person’s unique body chemistry.
Here at Ember, we offer full HTMA programs for members of our community. At this time, access is restricted to this group because demand tends to be quite high (and let’s be real, my time is finite!).
